More than 115 association executives and industry partners gathered at the Sheraton Framingham Hotel & Conference Center on January 16th and 17th for NE/SAE's 2019 Annual Management Conference.

Attendees attended educational sessions on a variety of topics, including organizational culture, engaging lapsed members, creating a value proposition, and benchmarking, among others.

Attendees also had opportunities to meet with exhibitors from a variety of hotels, event venues, technology companies, and other service providers, and continued networking at local dine-arounds.

Here's what a few NE/SAE members learned at the conference:

Michael McDonagh, Esq.
Chief Executive Officer
Associated Subcontractors of Massachusetts, Inc.

As a first time attendee and a new NESAE member, I found the Management Conference to be tremendously helpful. It gave me an opportunity to step back from my day to day obligations and think strategically about my association. The speakers were insightful and the networking opportunities were extremely valuable. I’m looking forward to the next NESAE Conference in May.

I recently attended NE/SAE’S Annual Management Conference and, as always, the topics were timely and up-to-date! Being a manager of membership, engaging and retaining members is my top priority. Scott Oser’s session of Re-Engaging Lapsed Members was of high interest to me. I came away with a lot of great ideas for getting former members back into my association. One suggestion that I can easily implement is to personally reach out to lapsed members, starting with a mailed letter listing the advancements and changes my association has made in the time the member left, and then following-up with a personal phone call.

The management conference is a great meeting that gives us the opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences and ultimately learn from peers and industry leaders. I feel that more often than not we get caught up in the day-to-day business of our associations and forget to think strategically (big picture) about how to help our associations define and achieve their long term/sustainable goals. A few ideas from my attendance:

  • Project and live the culture of the associations I work with. Remind members what is our mission and have it in mind always. Connect with members and ask them if we are living that mission and, most importantly, if they are benefiting from their membership.
  • Getting insights from an industry leader like Mike Dominguez gives me a different perspective of the market and helps me think differently, i.e. how technology changes have changed our members’ behavior or what to expect when sourcing for meeting venues.
  • Be more data-aware and use the information we already have to make better decisions in the benefit our associations. Benchmark against ourselves first.
