Sarbanes-Oxley and Governance in the Not-For-Profit World:
What Does it Really Mean for You!
Wednesday, November 8, 2006 - 9:00 a.m.
Greater Boston Real Estate Board Office
11 Beacon Street, Boston, Massachusetts
About the Presenters
The American Competitiveness and Corporate Accountability Act of 2002, aka, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, was signed into law on July 30, 2002 - its purpose was to rebuild public confidence in Americaís corporate sector after scandals such as Enron and Arthur Anderson permeated the current culture. The law requires that publicly traded companies adhere to significant new governance standards that broaden board members' roles in overseeing financial transactions and procedures.
Although most of the provisions of the Act apply to publicly traded corporations, the bill should also serve as a wake-up call to the non-profit community. Several state legislatures (California being the first) have already passed or are considering legislation containing elements of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act applied to non-profit organizations. Many non-profit organizations have started to review and adopt policies and governance practices in response.
Should your organization voluntarily adopt governance best practices, even if not mandated by law?
